Coast - The Southland community, supported by Environment Southland, can ensure the protection and sustainable use of our precious coastal resources.
Human activities can have a major effect on the components that comprise our coastline, from vast sandy beaches to valuable shellfish stocks, yet we depend on these for our health, enjoyment and livelihood. Managing the coast means addressing issues such as:
- effluent and industrial discharges
- occupation of coastal space
- commercial shellfisheries
- coastal erosion
- waste disposal
- dredging
- building
- leisure activities
- shipping hazards
- coastal access
Our coastline comprises a wide range of interrelated components - marine life, fish and shellfish stocks, beaches, river estuaries, wildlife habitats, plant communities and heritage sites. From the dramatic scenery of Fiordland to the pristine beaches of Stewart Island, we enjoy a range of recreational activities unique to Southland. Commercial fisheries, the tourism industry and the "wilderness experience" also rely on a healthy, life-supporting coastline. It's our job to ensure that this resource continues to thrive. |
